Will I get lost on the Camino de Santiago?

You will not get lost on the Camino. These are the most common symbols you will see along the way:

There are lots of signs that mark the Camino route, but ultimately they are either a shell symbol or a yellow arrow. Different cities sometimes use different designs (for example, the village en route to Estrella has large footprint designs), but all the cities work to be as clear as possible for pilgrims.

If you do find yourself turned around, particularly when looking for an Albergue or a specific location, I have found the Spanish people to be incredibly kind and helpful. Don’t be afraid to ask directions! In particular, the maps through non-Camino parts of Pamplona were very confusing. We asked directions from at least five locals, and all were happy to help. Cities were built after the Camino began, so most accommodate for the pilgrims that pass through every day. Pamplona and other large cities even have metal symbols stamped into the sidewalks along the path.

Here are basic phrases in Spanish to ask for directions: “¿Perdón, puede ayudame?” “Excuse me, can you help me?” “¿Perdón, sabe donde està el [location]?” “Excuse me, do you know where is the [location]?”
