Wielicza Salt Mine Tour

This mine just outside of Krakow, Poland contains over 300 km of tunnels. Miners, who didn’t possess maps, would pray to St. Anthony if they became lost in the maze. Today regular tours bring guests in and out safely, but locals still pray to St. Anthony when they lose something.

The salt mines here began operating as a dowry from a Hungarian princess marrying a Polish prince. Folklore says that she threw her engagement ring into the original pit, and the first chunk of salt found contained her ring.

At one time, salt was more valuable than gold, and employees were paid in salt - hence the word “salary.” In Polish, “sal” means “salt.”
