The Camino Francés: Week 2

Day 8: Trajados - Hontanas 6 hours | 30,000 steps | 13.15 miles (21.16 km) We are back in the swing of things! Taking a slower pace with more breaks. Today threatened to rain all day, but we still have yet to encounter rain on the Camino. We stopped at a lone municipal hostel called San Bol today. It is known for a cool stream on the lawn - legend says the stream cures foot ailments, which every pilgrim is facing by now. I highly recommend stopping, it was refreshing!

Day 9: Hontanas - Itero de la Vega 5 Hours | 27,000 steps | 11.78 Miles (18.96 km)

Today was our first rainy day! We have loved our packable rain jackets. The path today was a muddy mess, and it has been clear that waterproof hiking shoes were the way to go. Everything is covered in mud, but our walking poles made a huge difference in navigating the terrain. It seems like after four hours our heat/circulation rashes come back, so we are playing each day by ear. With our plans thrown off course, we are enjoying each day instead of stressing about making it to Santiago. If we can’t make it at this pace, we can always take a bus. This is a very different mentality from the one we started with - the Camino has a way of getting what it wants.

Day 10: Itero de la Vega - Villarmenteros de Campos 6 hours | 29,191 steps | 12.73 miles (20.5 km) Feeling good today! It has been colder this week, mid 60s Fahrenheit instead of mid 70s. The cooler weather may be helping with the heat rash that is going away now for both of us. With coffee and lunch breaks, we are slowly building up our mileage again. Today we stopped at a hippie-style Albergue called Albergue Amanecer. Our favorite Albergue by far! Loving the long hours of afternoon sunshine and hammocks in the shade and the incredible pilgrim new offered.

Day 11: Villarmenteros de Campo - Calzadilla 6 Hours | 34,250 steps | 14.94 Miles (24 km)

The walking has been really flat for this stretch and the weather has been wonderful. Beware of Spanish wine!

Day 12: Calzadilla - Saguhun 6 hours | 29,972 steps | 13 Miles (20.9 km)

The weather has been so good to us, but my feet are so sore. Today was a shorter day so we could rest a little, but tomorrow will be long again. We bought a Spanish Tortilla (a quiche-like omelette) for breakfast, and reheated half for lunch. It was delicious!

Day 13: Saguhun - Reliegos 8 hours | 44,762 steps | 19.53 Miles (31.4 km)

It was a long day today - but the weather was good and the walk was flat, so that helped! We walked alongside a lovely Irish woman today, and had great discussions about our families and world politics. How amazing that we have the opportunity to meet such a diverse range of people every day.

Wine cellars built into the ground!

Day 14: Reliegos - León 7 hours | 35,000 steps | 15.3 Miles (24.6 km)

My feet are killing me. Luckily, the forecast for rain every day never actually follows through, and we enjoy sunny days with time to dry our laundry in the evenings. We are juggling blister problems and a game plan for reaching Santiago, but it looks like we will make it with time to spare! León is beautiful. It’s good that we got here early enough to stay in the Municipal Albergue because the other places to stay are much more expensive. About halfway done now!
