1. The 1.5€ Lunch
In almost every village, you can purchase a baguette (1€), 5 slices of cheese (1€) and a package of cured pork (1€). This makes a great quick lunch for two, and my mother and I ate this simple sandwich every week. Adding sauces or olive oil is a great way to spice it up!
2. MEAT
It would be very difficult to be a vegetarian on the Camino de Santiago. Pork is in everything, and the Spaniards seem to take pride in being carnivorous. Any time you have the opportunity to eat fruit or vegetables on the way, take it!
3. Cafe con Leche
This is a Spanish latte, served in a small cup and rarely available “to-go.” For about 1.60€, this was our favorite way to start the day.
4. Pilgrim Meals
Most restaurants offer a “Pilgrim Menu” that include two small courses and a dessert for about 11€. While these are very popular, the actual value of the meal varies location to location. The Pilgrim meal is cheaper than ordering the items separately from the menu, but there are definitely cheaper ways to eat at the same restaurants. Sharing entrees (ranging from 9€ to 11€) with my mother as smaller meals once or twice per day allowed us to try different, local foods at a lower cost.
5. Chocolate con Churros
Thick, creamy hot chocolate that serves as a sauce for deep fried churros. Delicious.
