Lombarda on Korcula Island

Updated: Nov 19, 2018

We knew we wanted to explore the Croatian islands, but it wasn’t as easy as we thought it would be.

Primarily, this is because we were trying to book a place to stay less than 24 hours in advance. Luckily, the islands were not as expensive as we had anticipated if we were able to do them right.

With three girls looking for a place to stay, we decided to use AirBnB. Korčula island had the most options, but the port city of Korčula itself was pretty booked up - this turned out to be a blessing in disguise.

We reserved three nights in an apartment overlooking the bay in Lombarda, a city fifteen minutes outside of Korčula. We had the entire apartment to ourselves for $60USD per night, divided by the three of us. The view was amazing, the apartment was clean, and the hosts picked us up from the port and provided excellent advice. Korčula island is known for its wine, and Lombarda has two wine tasting locations within walking distance.

The GRK grapes, grown only on the island, produce fantastic dry wine. We walked to two tastings before exploring the beach that afternoon.

The water was clean and warm and the beach was sandy. We set up a photoshoot in this beautiful landscape to model Courtney’s beaded jewelry from her time in the Peace Corp in Eswatini, and support the business she is starting (@beadsbybuhle, check it out!).

With luck, we happened to be staying on a Friday night, and the AirBnB host directed us to the Friday night fish fry taking place in downtown Lombarda. It was a primarily community event with a few tourists, and the highlight of our time on the island.

We ate freshly grilled tuna and squid, fried calamari, homemade cheesecake, and more! Sitting on the beach with our paper plates of fresh food and Croatian locals at sunset with unforgettable.

If you are considering spending time on the islands, Lombarda was a hidden gem!
