On a Saturday afternoon in Botevgrad, I was eating lunch with the Valov family in their small flat. My good friend Martin was hosting my with his family - he was the only one who spoke English in the home. Moussaka and Dinya (watermelon) was followed by a tarot card reading led by a tarot card reading by his mother, Natasha. Martin said that she has special gifts, and translated for me while Natasha read my fortune. The part of the reading that stuck out to me the most was when she emphasized how important it was that I trust in god, because he will protect me. After saying this, the next card was a cross, and the next a snake. Point made. I find this particularly interesting because my travels thus far have had a strong religious focus, despite my not being very religious at all. The Camino de Santiago was 30 day Catholic pilgrimage church to church across northern Spain, and the first stops I made in Bulgaria were to churches and a monastery in Sofia. Perhaps I should be taking these stops more seriously. Yesterday Natasha gifted me with a rosary from the pope in Italy and a photo of the Virgin Mary. Perhaps this trip will be more spiritual than I thought it would be.
