When exploring what a couple of days in the beach would look like in Bulgaria, I thought Sunny Beach would be the way to go. As my good friend and Bulgarian tour guide explained to me, however, Nessebar just down the beach is a more laid back atmosphere with more history and less partying. That is exactly what I was looking for. At 4am, we began our traverse across Bulgaria on the southern highway that cuts through Plovdiv. By 9am, we had arrived, and booked a room at Hotel Dreams. It was cheap and within walking distance of both the beach and Nessebar Old City.
And then our beach vacation began. I could not believe how much fun I had in these two days. We spent the first day at Aquapark, a massive water park that did not seem to mind that my friend and I were 21 and 23 year olds. For 40лв or about $25 per person, we spent 8 full hours clambering up wet stairs, tumbling down water slides, and frying in the hot Bulgarian sun.
I am not a big waterslide person, but I was smiling non-stop. It was a blast, and I am so glad we went!
Except for the green slide. The green slide has no mercy.
That night, we toured Old Nessebar and enjoyed dinner with a view. My palate for wine is about as advanced as you would guess it to be at 21, but I hear that Bulgarian wine is some of the best in the world!
The next day was somewhat overcast, but hot enough to make for a perfect beach day. I touched the Black Sea for the first time! The water was warm, crystal clear, and surprisingly shallow.
Then we saw the paragliders. For 120лв, or about $70, two people could paraglide over the bay.
This was a bucket list item for me, and absolutely incredible. The boat guides were friendly and good natured, and the 10лв ($6) for GoPro pictures was totally worth it.
What an amazing couple of days!
