Herceg Novi
The highlights of Herceg Novi are a couple of fortresses built into the steep city. However, Maddie and I were feeling exhausted after a few days of rapid travel, and took this city easy. Our AirBnB was more of a hostel, and offered a balcony with a beautiful view of the harbor.
It was also the same view offered by one of the fortresses, so we decided that was good enough. We loved walking along the boardwalk and through the old town in this picturesque city. Our day was filled with ice cream, fresh juice, and shopping for paintings.
Tivat Our start to Tivat was rough. Our AirBnB had been rented to someone else, and when we took a taxi to our last minute rental on bookings.com, we couldn’t find the building. We called, and they said it has been rented to someone else. Nice. Twice in one hour. The taxi had left, but the random place we were dropped off was Hostel Anton. This cute hostel was a blessing, and we stayed two nights. The best part of the hostel was in fact a 15€ day tour they offered around the Bay of Kotor. This is far cheaper than every other tour we had found! We jumped on the opportunity.
Tivat itself was a small port city primarily for tourists, but it was a great starting point for this tour.
Ironically, the first tour stop was Herceg Novi, which we had already seen, but the rest of the tour was great.
Our Lady of the Rocks Catholic Church This artificial island has a cool history involving sailors throwing rocks, but unfortunately you get what you pay for with a 15€ tour and the mean tour guide screeching over high volume speakers in four languages taught me less than I had hoped.
Either way, the Church was beautiful, and you could buy beer and ice cream in the small store on the island.
Kotor We had 3.5 hours in Kotor and explored for every minute of it. This city is almost exclusively tourists, but the old town was extremely cool. Exploring the narrow streets and small artsy stores was a relaxing way to spend the day.
Perast Although the tour did not stop at Perast, you get a great view of this beautiful city from the boat at sunset.
You also get a lot of views of the monastery because it feels like you circled the island three times by the end of the night.
Budva
After parting ways with Maddie, I continued south to Budva. This busy beach city was what I expected, with a cool old town and expensive food. I spent hours on the Mogren beach and made a delicious salad in the hostel kitchen.
Budva was also a great central place for buses and I was able to bus directly to Albania.
